“He who every morning plans the transaction of the day and follows out that plan, carries a thread that will guide him through the maze of the most busy life. But where no plans are laid, where the disposal of time is surrendered merely to chance of incidence, chaos will soon reign”: Victor Hugo (1802-1885)

Mr. Dave Watson, Maintenance Manager at Caribbean Developments (Antigua) Ltd is a man quiet in disposition and of few words but once you become in contact with him, you will instantly recognize that he is equipped with the knowledge, experience, and the personality to do the job the way it should be done, and the way it must be done if it is to be the major contributing factor to a company’s, CDAL’s viability.

“Dave” as he is commonly called joined the company back in 2006 and since has been an integral force streamlining the entire maintenance infrastructure of Jolly Harbour Marina Village. He continues to play a vital role in every aspect of CDAL’s maintenance operations, and is an integral part of its development and enhancement. As with any job function, he establishes protocol procedures in Identifying, Analyzing, Scheduling and Monitoring the job to be done and provided resourceful and insightful contributions to the overall assessment and feasibility studies. Dave played a pivotal role during discussions held between APUA and Caribbean Developments (Antigua) Ltd with the view of agreeing to a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the supply and distribution of utilities at Jolly Harbour. Many would have observed Dave constantly doing routine checks and busily monitoring the infrastructure as it was very critical in assessing the distribution network for the supply of APUA electricity and water.

Mr. Watson and his team from the Maintenance Department provide exemplary service in supplying maintenance and construction supervision to the Jolly Harbour Marina Village community and on behalf of the management team, we say “thank you” for always going that extra mile.

The Maintenance Department continues to offer the Jolly Harbour Marina Village a list of services to assist you in having all your needs met. The department operates between the hours of 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday. A Maintenance Assistant is also on site every Saturday and Sunday between the hours of 7:00am to 4:00pm.

A Call Out Service is provided outside of our normal working hours for any emergency services that may be required, i.e. a water leak, an electrical problem, etc. Please note that should you require this service a temporary repair would be carried out to relieve the problem, if it cannot be rectified then, then a permanent repair will be done the following day. Our emergency telephone number is +1-268-464-4219.

Over 200 prominent Russian businessmen converged on Antigua and Barbuda for the 4th Annual Russian Business Sailing Week from March 17th to March 23rd 2012.

The event organized as an annual “getaway’ for Russian businessmen with the involvement of major Russian Business Media, had been organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, The National Parks Authority, The Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority (ABIA), The Jolly Harbour Marina Village, and the Jolly Beach Resort.

For seven days the Russians had an insightful taste of and viewed the beauty of the islands while ingesting some of our rich Antiguan culture, while at the same time having the opportunity to seek avenues of investment available in the twin island state. A week of activities saw the inclusion of business forums organized by the Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority. The climax of these forums took place on Tuesday March 20th at the Commercial Center of the Jolly Harbour Marina Village. (See photos)

“Activities such as this are extremely important because of the economic value which is attached to it. Several million dollars will be pumped into the local economy as a result of yacht rentals, food, entertainment and transportation purchases”, stated Mr. Fitzmaurice Christian, Investment Promotion Director at ABIA.

He continued, “Further adding value to the package, is the fact that several high network individuals looking for investment opportunities are a part of this grouping and we will be taking the opportunity on Tuesday evening during the Antiguan Business Forum to highlight avenues available for investment in Antigua and Barbuda.”

As a part of the week long activities, Minister of Tourism the Hon. John Maginley welcomed the Russians to Antigua during the official Welcome Reception held at the Jolly Beach Resort on March 17, and stated that his team has “pulled out all the stops” to ensure that their visit is memorable. He urged them to “indulge in all that the island has to offer, enjoy the races and of course be safe”.

Russian Consul for the Eastern Caribbean Mr. Egor Blagodatskiy took time out from his busy schedule in Jamaica to attend the Welcome ceremony. The Hon. Minister of Tourism conveyed sincere appreciation for the kind gesture.

The closing ceremony and final presentation of awards took place on Friday 23, at the Copper and Lumber Restaurant with Prime Minister Dr. The Hon. Baldwin Spencer presenting a self-titled trophy awarding the winner of the first division while Tourism Minister the Hon. John Maginley presented a trophy awarding the winner of the second division.

The Commercial Center give home-owners and visitors access to amenities within The Jolly Harbour Marina Village, such as a supermarket, banks, pharmacy, restaurants and small shops selling everything from water-sports products to hardware items to clothing and accessories. CDAL will be featuring tenants and business operators in our quarterly newsletters and in this issue we introduce “Horizon Yacht Charters”.

Horizon Yacht Charters was founded in 1988 by Andrew Thompson and Sylvia Driver. They first opened their doors to charter guests in Tortola, BVI and quickly became known as a top-tier charter company offering value for money, outstanding customer service and immaculately maintained yachts.

This base was followed by the opening of the Horizon Grenada base – with James and Jacqui Pascall at the helm. In 2003, the idea of opening a third base was born and Antigua was cited as the perfect location; beautiful beaches, consistent trade winds and the opportunity to sail blue water passages to other Caribbean islands as well as exploring the beauty of Antigua & Barbuda.

Alastair and Jackie Ashford are the operators of Horizon in Antigua. With a background in advertising and marketing, combined with a passion for racing one design yachts, Alastair and Jackie moved from their permanent home in the UK and Board positions with major Ad Agencies, to take on the challenge of a new business venture. They swapped their corporate suits for Horizon T-shirts and the venture began.

The base opened in November 2003 with just three boats and a full time team of three.
From those early days of start-up, the base grew to a fleet of 15 yachts in 2007/8 before the global financial crisis. Since then, they have maintained a fleet of 10/11 privately-owned charter yachts offering term charters to guests from as far afield as the US, Canada, South America, Russia, the UK and Europe. They operate year-round with all of their personnel out of Jolly Harbour Marina.

Their marketing dollars are channeled outside of Antigua through the use of digital marketing, press advertising, boat shows, PR and relationship marketing.

The team has grown to a full time team of six loyal personnel; covering roles as diverse as sales, marketing, reservations, technical and customer service. “Our team is dedicated to the provision of a quality charter experience for each of our guests. They bring professionalism and humour to every situation”. In addition, Horizon uses the services of quality craftsmen around the island for a number of services not covered in-house. “The support we have enjoyed over the years from suppliers and craftsmen around the island have been a major factor in being able to deliver high standards of service to our guests”.

As for the future, their ambition to grow the Antigua base remains as constant as ever whilst continuing to provide a rewarding working environment for the team. The Horizon Group continues to grow with other bases opened in St Martin, Annapolis (US) and further base openings in the US planned for 2012.
